(Overview of the tour)

Main destinations and brief comments

Kosaka Town, Akita Prefecture

The former Kudo Family Residence "NAKAKOJI no Yakata" was the residence of the Kudo family, who lived in this area for about 400 years, and the present building was constructed in 1885. The main building, with its thick Akita cedar pillars and beams, is a valuable cultural property that is rarely seen today.

The "Kourakukan" (opened in 1910), a National Important Cultural Property, is an extremely valuable wooden theater that continues to be used for performances today. The tour will also include a visit to this theater.

The first night will be spent at the three-star "Towada Hotel" (built in 1939). The hotel is a magnificent combination of Japanese and Western styles, and was constructed by a total of 80 MIYA-DAIKU (temple carpenters) from the surrounding area at the time.

Towada Hotel > Sannai-Maruyama Site > Kanagi town

On the second day, we will head north from Towada Hotel along the western route of the shore of Lake Towada to the Sannai Maruyama in Aomori (subject to change depending on road conditions).

The Sannai-Maruyama Site Center is a museum that exhibits reproductions of dwellings and excavated items from the early to middle Jomon Period (approximately 3,900 to 2,200 B.C.). After visiting the site, we will go to Goshogawara, known for "Tachi Neputa", and visit the Osamu Dazai Memorial Museum "Shayokan" in Kanagi town.

We will stay at a three-star hotel in Ajigasawa on the second day.

Ajigasawa > Iwakiyama Shrine > Aoike (Shirakami-Sanchi)

On the third day, we will go from Ajigasawa town to "Iwakiyama Shrine" which has a history of about 1200 years. If the weather is fine, visitors can enjoy the unique scenery of the shrine pavilions set against  Mount Iwaki. After that, we will go south from Ajigasawa along the Japan Sea Coast to visit Aoike (Blue Pond), which is a part of the World Heritage Site "Shirakami Sanchi". It is said that Hayao Miyazaki was inspired by this pond during the making of his "Princess Mononoke".
