Highlights

Yasujirō Ozu (1903-1963), one of Japan’s most renowned film directors, has deep ties to Kamakura. Scenes of Kamakura appear in his films, such as "Tokyo Story", "Late Autumn", and "Early Summer". Additionally, the Kamakura Kawakita Film Memorial Museum opened in 2010 (Heisei 22) on the site of the former residence of Nagamasa and Kashiko Kawakita—a couple who contributed to the development of Japanese cinema—with the aim of promoting Kamakura’s film culture. Modeled after the traditional Sukiya-style architecture that evokes the area’s historic charm, the museum hosts exhibitions of film materials, film screenings, as well as lectures, seminars, and workshops (https://www.cinemaclassics.jp/news/3789/).

Kamakura has deep ties not only to Ozu but also to Japanese cultural figures active from the Meiji era through the Shōwa era; there is even a term, “Kamakura Bunshi” (Kamakura literati). The list is endless, but examples of leading Shōwa-era literary figures include.

 Yasunari Kawabata: Nobel Prize-winning author. He wrote numerous works set in the Kamakura region, such as "The Sound of the Mountain" and "A Thousand Cranes".

Jiro Osaragi: A writer known for "Kurama Tengu". The teahouse he frequented (the Jiro Osaragi Teahouse) still stands in Kamakura.

Masao Kume and Ton Satomi: They moved to Kamakura during the Taisho period and led the literary world as the driving force behind the later “Kamakura literati.”

 

Ryunosuke Akutagawa: He rented rooms and lived in Yuigahama and Omachi, writing works such as "The Ball" during his stay.
